We have a hot donut microwaved from the local service station next door for breakfast and then catch the hiker shuttle, driven by Mike, back to the trail.

The shuttle deposits 12 hikers and one dog at Dicks Creek Gap at 9.00am.
We are walking with two young women and their dog 'Claire'. I thought what a stupid name for a dog. Who would guess that a year later I would have a new puppy called Claire. Over the next few months we cross paths with these two and the dog frequently. We also meet 'Food Network' who carries a ukelele strapped to his back pack. We climb steadily. Just before camp we cross the border into North Carolina - our first border crossing.
